Qxtender - User Guide - QB App Controller Mode access to QuickBooks Data

When Qxtender is started, the Set Data Mode dialog is displayed. Select "QB Application Control Mode" and click "OK."

Or choose "Set Data Mode..." from the File menu, or click the "Set Data Mode" button on Qxtender's toolbar to open this dialog.

Note: QB App Controller Mode should be used for QB 2006 and Enterprise 6 and later. QB Direct File Mode is recommended for data files from QB version 2005 and earlier, and Enterprise version 5 and earlier.

Setting QB App Controller Options

After clicking OK on the Set Data Mode dialog, the QB App Controller Options dialog is displayed.

The default settings should work fine in most cases.

If operations are sluggish in QuickBooks, due to:

  • Slow computer
  • Very large data file
  • Multi-user
  • Datafile on file server
  • A combination of the above

You may need to change the settings to prevent the QB App Controller from losing sync with QuickBooks. Follow the instructions on the dialog.

You can open this dialog at any time to change the settings. Select "QB App Controller Options" from the File menu.

The company data file must be open in QuickBooks

The QB App Controller Data Mode requires that QuickBooks be running. If not, this message will appear.

Getting QuickBooks ready

Open your data file in QuickBooks and login as Admin. Close any message windows that appear at startup.

Although it is not absolutely necessary, you should close all of QB's internal windows by selecting "Close All" on the Window menu.

Qxtender activates the QuickBooks application window and begins sending keystrokes to control it. You risk interrupting this process if you click your mouse or press any keys.

Qxtender initializes a connection to QuickBooks

Qxtender initializes a connection to the QuickBooks application, retrieves version information and company data.

During this process the QuickBooks application window is brought to front, with the QB App Controller information window on top.

Initialization complete

When the connection has been initialized, a message box will open noting:

  • Name of the company data file and version of QB.
  • Direct Mode license information.
  • If a Direct Mode upgrade is required, there will be additional instructions on how to do so.

The name of the company will appear on the Title Bar of Qxtender (above the menus). The current Data Mode and QB version is also indicated.

All Plugins that support the QB App Controller Data Mode now have access to the data of the currently loaded company.
